A BEAUTIFUL NEW DRAWING TOOL
My latest drawing tool – a real treasure
Some time ago I bought a cheap proportional divider to help with my continual problem of getting size and proportion correct in my drawings. I am improving in this direction, but sometimes it is extremely helpful to use this tool, especially in the initial stages of a drawing.
This divider is adjustable by removing the blue plastic part and moving the pin to the holes of your choice. This means that one is limited to the different proportions determined by the distance between the holes – not too much of a problem really, but not perfect! The main problem with this particular tool is that the hinge formed by the pin is extremely loose, and it is almost impossible to move the divider from the reference to the drawing without moving the arms, rendering it useless.
I had heard that there were brass ones available, with the hinge fixed with a screw, but that most of these were antiques and very expensive. I was delighted, therefore, to find a whole collection of plotting and drafting instruments in brass, in fine polished wood presentation boxes, of modern manufacture following traditional antique designs, and at a very reasonable price. The one I bought had a 5-star rating on Amazon so I went for it; it was only a few pounds more expensive than the same thing in a faux leather pouch, and I thought it was worth it to get the beautiful box with its brass fittings.
I was extremely pleased with the finish of the box, which is polished hardwood (unidentified). I had expected it to be a bit rough around the edges. The clasps work beautifully and (not visible in the photo above) there are brass fittings around the edges. There is a small locator pin in the centre which gives the lid a nice snug feeling as you close it. You can barely feel the inlaid anchor as you run your fingers over the surface.
Opening the box:
The divider lies on a lining of dark blue flock fabric.
The divider has various measurements on it, marked for lines, circles etc. One of the comments on the site left only 4 stars because there were no instructions with the instrument, but since there are so many videos online showing how to use it, I don’t think this is too much of a drawback. As far as I am concerned, I know how to use it for my own purposes.
The screw locks the divider almost completely tight. Slightly looser, you can adjust it, but when tightened, it is in no danger of moving as you transfer it from the reference to your drawing.
I have used it a couple of times and it is great – a perfect repacement for the cheap plastic one. It feels heavy and substantial in the hand, and is of high quality workmanship to match that of its box.
It’s a great addition to my art supplies!
