DOMESTIKA COURSE – ENGLISH CALLIGRAPHY – PRACTICE AND CONSOLIDATION

Another afternoon session in the studio today, practising the capital letters and consolidating what I’ve already learnt.

Capital letters group 4

I began my session by following our teacher’s advice to “warm my hand” with a few exercises. I think these spirals and long “infinities” are better than on my first sheet!

I wrote a sheet of “C’s” and “E’s” and I definitely felt a lot more confident with these rather difficult letters than I did yesterday.

As I continued to watch the video, I realised that this group also included the letter “G” as well as “C” and “E,” so I spent some time today learning how to write this. As always, my first attempts were all over the place!

When I thought I’d more or less got the hang of “G,” I incorporated some “C’s” and “E’s” as well. These letters are very curly and swirly and I love them!

Consolidation

Although I have not yet finished learning the capital letters, I thought I’d take a pause and consolidate what I’ve learnt so far. I did a couple of sheets of the lowercase letters and their associated capitals that I’ve done at this stage. When there wasn’t an associated capital, I filled the space with other capitals that I thought could do with more practice.

Looking back at my original lowercase letters, I can see that I have improved. I haven’t been practising them specifically since beginning the capitals, but just the action of writing with the pen has improved my technique and confidence. I do have to keep looking back to see how to write the letters correctly because they are not yet firmly embedded in my brain. That will come with time and practice. One day I’ll be able to sit down, get out my grid and light panel, and write anything I want without any references! Just like learning to drive. You steer, and change gear, without thinking about it. Muscle memory is also a wonderful thing!
