What’s On My Workdesk this Wednesday? Not a great deal – just my Cuttlebug and some dies, to cut some pantry labels.

Labels for the Pantry

Some time ago I made printed labels on the computer for my glass jars in the pantry. I really like these, and need to print off some more.

Inside the Pantry

One doesn’t always want a permanent label, though. Sometimes you make a dressing or something like that, and it’s easy to forget what it is. A while back, I discovered you could buy a roll of self-adhesive matt black paper which you could write on with chalk, or a chalk pen. This looked so cool, so I ordered some. This stuff die-cuts beautifully so I cut a few pretty-shaped labels to go on my temporary jars and bottles.

The roll of label paper came with a selection of chalks to write with. However, I found they don’t write very well, and can easily be wiped off.

I found my white gel pen was better for writing on the labels than chalk. It doesn’t rub off, but you can easily wipe it off with a damp cloth.

I think it looks quite cool! The labels are peelable, which is a bonus.

Recipe of the Week

I am so enjoying my new adventures in mostly wholefood, plant-based foods that I thought I would share a favourite recipe each week.

Cauliflower Cashew Lunch Bowls

Cauliflower Cashew Lunch Bowls

This is one of the recipes I did in my meal prep last week. It is utterly delicious! We had it for lunch on Monday, sitting on the seat in front of the summer house at the top of the garden. I adapted it slightly from the online recipe, using quinoa rather than pearl barley, which I haven’t got.

I made a bed of little gem lettuce and rocket leaves and tomato, and sprinkled on some flax seeds and pumpkin seeds. I drizzled on some of “Chef AJ’s Husband’s Favourite No-Oil Balsamic Vinaigrette” – I’ve nearly finished this so must make some more! It’s made from balsamic vinegar, nutritional yeast, soy sauce, date or maple syrup and Dijon mustard blended together. I spooned the cauliflower salad on top and decorated it with some more tomatoes and cucumber slices. The whole thing was delicious and full of interesting flavours and textures. With the quinoa and chickpeas, it is very sustaining but has low caloric density, so it is great for weight loss as well as general health.

We both lost another pound last week. That’s a bag of sugar between us!

If anyone is interested in pursuing a wholefood, plant-based lifestyle for its remarkable health benefits, I can highly recommend the ground-breaking documentary film “Forks Over Knives” which is on Netflix. It isn’t on Youtube, but there is plenty of other useful material on there.

Yesterday’s Meal Prep

Well, ingredient prep, really. Lots of chopping, ready to make up into recipes. Here’s the post about it.

Eco Project

I am continuing to work on my eco project, which I’m not quite ready to reveal just yet! It’s taking a bit of time. It involves some sewing and other things too. Watch this space.

Health Update

Tomorrow I’ve got my two hospital appointments. The first is at lunch time at Torbay Hospital, seeing my regular colorectal surgeon, and the second is in Exeter in the evening, to have my CT scan. This was ordered by the Exeter colorectal surgeon I was referred to for a second opinion as to the best way forward to treat my parastomal hernia. I’ve had to wait weeks for this scan. He wants it with me lying on my stomach, which I’ve never had before!

I have been approached by Trio Ostomy Care, the manufacturer of the silicone-based stoma accessories which I use. These products are fabulous, and quite revolutionary. They are about to launch a new product and are asking for volunteers to trial it. I have no idea what it is but I thought I’d apply. I had to complete a short questionnaire which included details about my stoma and the condition of the surrounding skin, and whether I was undergoing any treatment which would affect it. I am not sure whether being under observation with the possibility of further surgery to repair a parastomal hernia will eliminate me from the trial, so we shall have to wait and see. I really want to take part in this and to try and help if I can, because their products are so good, and I have had quite a few dealings with their staff. One of them phones me every few months to see how I’m getting on and we always have a nice chat. I have also met other reps at various open days and Ileostomy Association meetings.

I first came across them while I was awaiting my initial surgery. My hubby went to the dentist and told him that I was about to undergo stoma surgery, and he said I should check out Trio Healthcare. The managing director is a close friend of his, together with the graphic designer who has produced such gorgeous packaging for them (not in the least clinical), and they all used to live near each other, and their kids went to school together. It’s a nice personal association with this great British company which has recently received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for the second time.

Finally…

A painted lady butterfly in our garden. It’s a bit out of focus because I had to snap it quickly with the zoom on my iPad.

What a delicious looking meal Shoshi. Useful food prep done as well. What a great idea for reusable labels for your pantry. It looks beautifully arranged with all the neat shelves and lovely labelled glass jars. Hope the appointments go well and that you don’t have to wait too long for your scan results. Apparently we are expected to see lots of Painted Ladies but so far I have not seen any – but then I rarely go out so not a great surprise there. Doh!
Will be thinking of you tomorrow, hope all goes well with both appointments.
Gosh that’s a lot of veggie prep. Hope you got help with it and didn’t chop it all on your own. It all looks delicious chopped up and in its individual little bags but I think the cauliflower cashew lunch bowls take the award this week, they look delicious and have the weight loss bonus on top of being tasty and good for you. Thanks for the recipe I almost asked last week if you would share some of your makes. The labels look fab and I do like the idea of the black ones – well done for finding such a great alternative.
Looking forward to the eco reveal – you are teasing us again, just like the slippers.
Hugs, & Thanks for a great post

I have pantry envy lol!!! How wonderful does it look with all those beautifully labelled jars, I love that. What a great idea, I like the black labels too – now all I need is the pantry to put things in!

Hi Shoshi, those labels are great, love the ability to re-use. Love your larder too, so easy to see everything. Hope all goes well with your scan, Hugs, Shaz # 4 X

Great idea for the labels Shoshi, there is a chalk pen that you can buy that is removable with a wet cloth it does a grand job for surfaces just like these. I find I eat more and more veggies during Spring/Summer and Autumn, as my Daughter is vegetarian I could easily leave out meat in my diet but the boys/men in the house would not be very happy if I did not add it to most of their meals.
All the best for the hospital appointments, Hubby’s are tomorrow and Friday so early start for us. Keep us posted on how it all goes.
I’m looking forward to seeing your ECO project šŸ˜‰ Happy WoywW Hugs Tracey #8
    P.S Isn’t the painted lady beautiful…

That bowl looks lovely, until I read that it has cauliflower in it, and I shuddered. Pleased to hear you enjoyed it and are losing weight.
Those labels are nice, I never thought of doing them in black, I might just have to have a go.
    Thanks for sharing

sorry Iā€™m late! a picture that made me smile – Jars of semolina, raisins, PVA glue, Mace…..can tell this is the shelf of a crafter!! Nice to see your desk!
I can feel your enthusiasm for the plant based dietary lifestyle, it certainly takes up a lot of time!

Your pantry looks so charming, I would hate to mess it up cooking. I have some of that chalkboard sticky paper that I used to make some table place cards, using a Tim Holtz die I have. Since I use chalk to write the names, I’ve been able to use them for several dinner parties. That cauliflower and cashews salad sounds marvelous, especially since I’m watching my Cholesterol intake these days. Sorry to hear about all your hospital appointments and pray they all go well. Blessings and happy belated WOYWW!
