Today was such a lovely sunny day (about the first this summer!) that my hubby suggested we went out, and he drove us to Brixham, which is a fishing town in Torbay, not far from where we live. I had visited friends there, but had never been along the harbour before. It is very picturesque, and the area has been lovingly kept by local volunteers, making it a very pleasant experience for visitors.
Walking along the harbour, we found this beautiful sculpture of two fishermen. I love the way they are looking so intently out to sea.
Here is the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s donation box. We have now lost a lot of lifeboats around the country, but the Torbay one is still at Brixham.
Brixham harbour.
We went along the path that runs above the harbour and beach.
The marina, which is just outside the harbour entrance.
Beside the path is a series of beautiful little gardens, lovingly cared for by Brixham volunteers.
The Brixham lifeboat.
The beach. This is a pebble beach, so not as much fun as a sandy one, but lovely nonetheless.
We discovered this poignant memorial of the D-Day landings in World War 2. It is only days since the whole country remembered this auspicious day, 75 years ago. It was lovely to see a special wreath laid in memory of the Canadian servicemen (front left).
When we reached the end of the path, we had ice creams – always a treat at the seaside! We had Cornish clotted cream with vanilla. Yum! (Not good for the waistline but hey-ho, another diet day on Monday!)
After this, we went along the top of the breakwater and got some lovely views.
At the end of the breakwater is a lighthouse.
The town of Brixham is so picturesque and pretty, with the rows of coloured houses rising up above the harbour.
Coming back along the breakwater, we spotted this magnificent stone house perched on the top of the hill above the town. It has a splendid gateway, a large balcony over a colonnade, and a massive patio with stone balustrades. I love the ornate detailing under the eaves, and the ironwork on the rooftop.
To the right of the stone gateway is what looks like a WW2 gun emplacement.
As we came back to the car park, we encountered the Brixham Pirate. I had a nice chat with him and he said he is out most days, entertaining the visitors. I told him we’d seen another marvellous pirate at the County Show a few weeks ago, and he said he knew him well!
Today was such a lovely warm, sunny day and it was perfect for our outing. We are so fortunate to have such attractive places right on our doorstep, and it was such a treat just to be out and enjoying the sea air and sunshine, with plenty of interest to look at.
