Today we went up onto Dartmoor for a picnic. It was a beautiful day, and I was anxious to try my new Trekinetic wheelchair on this different terrain. It has been so many years since I have been up on the moors and actually got off the road, so this was a real treat. OK, I couldn’t get far, because even with this wonderful all-terrain wheelchair, there are some limits! The ground was very rocky and uneven, and also, I am still rather lacking in confidence. I got stuck once or twice and needed my hubby to haul me out!

Using a granite rock as a table, we sat and ate our picnic.

I love the colours of the heather and gorse growing together.

After lunch we struck off up the path.

It was such a treat to get out into this wonderful wide open space. I grew up on West Dartmoor and have always loved the wildness and solitude. In the old days, in the summer, the air would be full of the songs of skylarks but these days they are silent. So sad. The smell is very special up there, with the sun on the heather and gorse, and the grass closely cropped by the sheep and Dartmoor ponies.
