Page 1 – Waterfall
Inside the front cover, I have created a waterfall with papers from the DCWV paper stack “The Far East.”
The waterfall of four flaps is kept closed with a tab which hinges downwards, and kept closed with a magnet. I set an eyelet through which I attached a dangle consisting of cords with beads (including a carved antique bead) and one of the little Japanese wooden charms I got in a pack of Japanese items from a craft show. Folded down, it enables the waterfall flaps to be lifted.
Here is a montage of photos showing the flaps being lifted in turn. Each one has a hidden image on its underside, and they are separated by strips of washi tape covering the background paper of the page.
Pages 1 and 2 spread
This is colour-co-ordinated, as I have attempted to achieve with all further double-page spreads. Page 2 is simply a matted and layered large image of Japanese ladies stuck down onto the background page. No further embellishment was necessary, and there is nothing interactive on this page. In fact many of the interactive pages in the book are faced with simple pages. (This photo was taken before I made the embellishment on the waterfall flap.)
Page 3 – Fan page
A simple cut-out of an elegant Japanese lady on the right, and on the left, an interactive element.
The belly band is made from a scrap of tea-dyed calico with a piece of hand-made paper decorated with some faux Oriental script. It is finished off with an embellishment consisting of beads, a fan and a small Oriental coin, joined by a piece of red twine.
Tucked behind it is a fan trimmed with lace and embellished with another small coin.
Different papers were layered onto the fan shape, and the folding mechanism of the fan indicated by some darker lines near the centre.
Lifting the small blue ribbon tab on the left of the embellishment, the first pop-up of the album is revealed – another fan. I cut the ribs of this fan with an Exacto knife and it was very difficult! I had several attempts at getting this one right. The only fold in the fan is at the vertical centre; the pleating is an illusion done with shading. The pop-up is kept closed with a magnet.
Pages 3 and 4 spread
Again, the page opposite the interactive one is plain, with three Oriental tags glued down onto a really beautiful background page from the collection. Nothing further needs to be added to this page.
Page 5 – Pink page
I made a simple pocket across the bottom of this page, with a layered cluster of Japanese and scrap papers and a touch of red lace. In the pocket is a large square tag made from a laminated piece of napkin using a matte laminating pouch, also matted and layered and embellished with some lace.
On the back of the tag, I used some more of the laminated napkin to create a belly band with a circular Japanese motif, behind which is a smaller tag with some red paper matted onto hand-made paper. This is plain on the back.
Pages 5 and 6 spread
The full-sized image from the collection was sufficient decoration for page 6. All I did was to add a few sparkles with touches of gold glitter glue, and I added a paper strip which I’d created with inking and stamping as part of another project, and some more red lace.
Page 7 – Turquoise with tags
This page has two staggered pockets. Each holds a tag, shown removed in the above photo. A scalloped circular die cut frames the image of the Japanese lady and the pocket is edged with more of my stamped paper strip and some turquoise and gold washi tape. A strip of digital download washi is on the right. The larger tag is matted onto gold card and the smaller one is embellished with fibres and charms.
Pages 7 and 8 spread
This shows the two tags in place in their respective pockets, and on page 8, another Japanese lady tops an exciting pop-up, opened by lifting the gold ribbon tab on the right. It is further embellished with more of my stamped paper strip and printed digital washi tape.
