SKETCHING AT COCKINGTON AGAIN

Yesterday we had another outing to Cockington, this time to share a meal at The Drum with friends. We set off early enough to get in some sketching time before lunch. After some pretty awful and cold weather from the beginning of June, things began to pick up a bit over the past few days, and yesterday it was glorious – lovely bright sunshine, and I even caught the sun a bit!

Court Cottage

I was intrigued by this little alleyway running past a very old cottage – it is all one house. I thought the angles would make an interesting challenge. The picture looks wonky because the building is wonky!!

While I was sitting there, some people arrived and said they would be bringing out a fridge, so I had to move aside for a bit, and watch them expertly manoeuvre this huge glass-fronted fridge out of the narrow door and down the narrow path, over a few uneven steps and into the back of an estate car! It was quite impressive to watch, with the lady of the house observing the procedure. Then as I continued sketching, the lady came out again and asked if I’d like a cup of coffee! She made me the most delicious frothy coffee accompanied by a biscuit, and a chair to put it on!!

Then someone else came along with a very impressive camera and asked if he could photograph me at work, to which I readily agreed. He has subsequently sent me the photos, and those of my hubby too, who was sketching another building just across the road.

Rose Cottage

Then we moved on, and each chose a different view of Rose Cottage.

While we were sketching away, loads of people came and watched and expressed interest, and great enthusiasm for what we were doing! They all loved it, and my hubby actually sold one of his drawings to one of them!! So many delightful people, including a large family on holiday from Hull, in the North of England. For anyone embarrassed about sketching in public, have confidence and go for it! It gives so many people so much joy. Everyone loves to see an artist at work, and however bad you think you are (which you probably actually aren’t), you are probably a lot better than most of the people stopping to admire your art, who probably aren’t artists at all! They would go away and treasure this extra memory of a lovely day out in a beautiful Devon village on a fabulous sunny day.

A convivial lunch out with friends

We then went and had our lunch and it was the most fabulous time. We had a lovely long time lingering over the meal but it seemed to pass in a matter of minutes! We agreed that we must do this again, and go on some other outings together as well. Delicious food, excellent company and conversation, lots of laughs, and as always, very good service in a delightful setting. What could be better?

We wandered about a bit more after parting company, and I was amazed to see it was 4 p.m. when we got back to the car. Such a gorgeous day out!
