Spray Stains Storage

Today the spice rack I ordered from Amazon arrived, to store my Distress Spray Stains in.

Unboxing:

It is quite substantial, and very well built. The glass spice jars have a plastic sprinkler top inside, under the metal lids (which have a blue protective film on them). It turns very nicely on its revolving base. This is the largest of the models they do, and it holds 20 jars.

As I suspected, the holes are too large for the Spray Stain bottles, which fall through.

I knew I was most likely going to have to adapt this somewhat, in order to make it work.

I had a good rummage in the studio to see if I had anything that would sort the problem, and found my box of old toilet roll cores. They are exactly the right size to fit snuggly in the holes. I put one in and sliced off a diagonal portion where it hits the retainer inside, and drew around the metal hole at the top end and cut away the excess. This was the result.

Not desperately elegant but it does work. If the cardboard was painted and glued neatly in place around the hole, with maybe a trim of some sort added around the edge, it might look presentable.

I then wondered if perhaps a plastic bottle with the top cut off might work, but I didn’t have anything the right size. I had a look online and there are various bottle companies that sell all kinds of empty bottles, both glass and plastic, and I did find something that might have done, but I would need quite a lot and it would just add to the expense.

The ideal solution would be to use the glass jars that actually came with the unit, because they fit perfectly, and at the right angle, and they are also transparent so I would be able to see the label of the spray bottle through them. The trouble is, the neck is too narrow for the bottle. This led me to exploring the idea of using a bottle cutter to remove the tops of the jars. I have asked a question under the details of a very reasonably priced bottle cutter, asking how small a bottle or jar this tool would take, but I haven’t heard back yet.

One of the drawbacks of getting this spice rack was that it came complete with 20 glass jars which I really didn’t need, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them. If they can be utilised to hold my spray bottles, that would be the best solution of all, even if it does involve a bit more work. After all, they are designed to fit in the holes.

If all else fails, the toilet roll solution would work at a pinch, but I’d rather have something a bit more permanent than cardboard, and I don’t want to spend a vast amount sorting out the problem.

I am quite sure I shall find a solution in time. The unit is lovely, and if it is successful, I would consider buying another one.

The cardboard box it came in did not remain empty for long:
