COMPUTER NEWS – LINUX ZORIN OS ON SECOND LENOVO THINKPAD
I had a dig around on Ebay and found loads of ThinkPads, and found one almost identical in specs to my own but a slightly later model, and cheaper than what I paid for mine. I bought it for my hubby, and it arrived today. It looks absolutely pristine and brand new.
Linux at last!
I spent this afternoon installing Linux Zorin OS 18 on this laptop and apart from one or two glitches (my own fault, not doing something properly), it all went in like a dream. Acer could learn a thing or two from Lenovo… My hubby is delighted, and doesn’t think he’s going to have too many problems with it. He’s already been on the Internet and as I explained to him, it is identical to his old Windows laptop because it’s all online and nothing to do with the operating system. I think he finds this reassuring! He’s had a quick look at Libre Office Writer and thinks it looks pretty good. I said the interface was very similar to Microsoft Word and now I’ve got his familiar fonts installed, he isn’t going to notice too much difference.
I’ve written a few things down for him in a small notebook, and dedicated some spages at the back for my own notes, should anything go wrong and I need to reinstall anything – just reminders of what I’ve done.
I think he will be pleasantly surprised how slick and smooth everything is, and he will soon get used to the slight differences in the interface.
Again I have to thank Aravisian on the Zorin forum for all his patience and help. This evening I found another post at the end of that ultra-long thread from another member who had not hitherto commented, which reads as follows:
“Having read along during your earlier efforts under Aravisian’s patient guidance, I think I speak for many when I say we appreciate your grit, and your optimism. Glad to have you on the forum!”
Isn’t that lovely? It quite made my day! So encouraging at the end of an extremely long, arduous and in the end, unproductive journey as we had to admit defeat and abandon the ghastly Acer setup!
I am feeling very pleased with how everything has gone at last. Sometimes you have to go down a long dead-end in life before you find the correct path and all is well.
A good outcome Shoshi! Very well done – worth all the effort.
