You are currently viewing Decorating the Downstairs Loo – the Wallpapering

The fun began today when Mark, the decorator, began to paper our downstairs loo. This once dingy and boring room is now anything but!

The room is very small, and despite the cramped conditions, Mark worked fast. He had soon completed papering the ceiling with the gorgeous dark blue wallpaper covered with silver stars.

He then began papering the walls with the dramatic jungle wallpaper.

He said that because the pattern was so big, he may have difficulty with the final join, where the pattern would not join up, but it was all so straightforward. The final join is over the door in the top right hand corner as you sit on the throne, and you really don’t notice that the pattern isn’t continuous.

In this photo you can see how well he has camouflaged the once unsightly pipe coming down the corner of the room by the window.

I forgot to photograph the door before he papered it. It had a recessed panel in it, and my hubby produced some plywood which Mark cut to size and used to fill the recess. This gave him a flat surface to work on. Here is the door panel with the wallpaper on it. It looks a bit strange with the white door frame around it, but once this is painted dark green, it will look more or less continuous with the walls.

I am extremely pleased with the quality of both of the wallpapers, especially the jungle one. Mark said it was high quality and nice to hang. The leaves are slightly embossed so it’s got a bit of texture. The whole thing is rich and exciting.

Mark had really hoped to have completed the project today, but unfortunately the base for the very dark green paint had not arrived. He is collecting it from Plymouth tomorrow, and will come in the afternoon to do the painting. This was rather a nuisance for him, as he has other jobs waiting, and it left him with a spare afternoon today, but he said he would be able to fill it with odd jobs.

I have ordered a few bits and pieces online to complete the project, including a small teardrop chandelier like this one that we bought for the flat sitting room:

I thought the teardrops were rather fun and would be suitable for a rainforest theme! I am intending to dismantle the new one and retain the drops, but replace the other parts with longer strings with butterflies and birds, leaves and flowers on them, making a jungle-themed mobile.

I have found some very pretty little hummingbirds on Ebay, and I’ve also ordered a set of butterflies which are really supposed to be for the garden. Each one is on a wire which you stick into the ground. I am intending to remove these and then attach the pretty butterflies to the mobile. I did think of making the butterflies but I thought metal ones would be more durable than paper ones, and they were so cheap that it wasn’t worth the hassle of making them. I shall make the flowers and leaves, though.

Also, I’ve ordered a poster which is going to be incorporated into the door panel. This will give a dramatic and surprising twist to the theme which I hope our visitors will enjoy!

Some of these things may take a while to come, and I shall work on each stage as it becomes available.

Watch this space for the complete Shoshification of our downstairs loo!
