Back in the studio again briefly, to make a special card for a special friend! This is how my desk looked on Monday afternoon.

Materials for making card

It was my friend’s 60th birthday and she invited me and four other special friends for a girls’ lunch at Bistrot Pierre in Torquay. I had never been there before and it was fabulous! The food and the company were fabulous too! I felt very honoured to be part of this select little gathering of Ladies who Lunch. It was so much fun and I said we ought to do it more often!

Six was an ideal number for our little party, because it meant we could all share in a single conversation, and also divide into smaller ones if we wanted to. We all got on so well together. My friend remarked that all of us were so creative, which was lovely. We were musicians and artists and seamstresses and interested in everything going on in the world around us, so we had plenty to talk about.

The card

Finished 60th birthday card

Please see my previous post for details of how I made this. We had such laughs over the recycled loo roll wrapping paper! She didn’t recognise it until I’d given her plenty of heavy hints! She thought some of the doodles looked like gut bacteria and I said she was going in the right direction! She and I have had plenty of discussions about gut bacteria, because she was the one who put me onto fermented foods last year. I had just completed my final course of powerful antibiotics and was keen to get my gut microbiome back into shape. She was instrumental in my rapid recovery from my serious illness last spring.

Health update

Not much of an update, actually, because there’s no news on any front!

Still no news from the hospital in Exeter about the CT scan Mr. Daniels ordered for me. Until that is done, he won’t know how to approach any repair of my parastomal hernia which might need to be done. Maybe I need to phone them and see what is happening, but I know how busy they are.

Still waiting for my new wheelchair, of course. We can’t expect it before the end of July, and I can’t wait for its arrival!

Also still waiting to hear back from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) about my disability benefit application. They have apparently shortened their waiting list for face-to-face assessments to twelve weeks. Ho hum. No point getting psyched up just yet, then.

I’ve been very fatigued this past week, in between my various activities. Life does seem to get very busy, and then when I stop, I tend to flop and need to rest. I am finding it very hard to get going in the mornings. Once I’ve got up and had a restful morning, by the middle of the day I can usually do things before needing to rest again. My diurnal rhythm is way out of sync again, which is not helpful. I tend to get very wide awake and quite “wired” late at night and want to stay up well into the small hours. I don’t have any trouble getting off to sleep once I get to bed, but wake frequently for no apparent reason. Then I don’t want to wake up at a sensible time! Compared with my hubby who can sleep and sleep, I need very little and often get away with four or five hours a night. Sometimes I need a brief power nap during the day to recharge the old batteries.

Christening my new kitchen knives

Kitchen knives

A baptism in blood, actually. It was the long one, third from the top. (These are the new knives that I got last month at the County Show.) I knew it was only a matter of time, but I managed to slice my finger on Friday. This time it wasn’t so bad that I had to go to A&E and I’ve dressed it myself, but it’s very inconvenient not being able to get it wet. Also, I can’t play my guitar! It’s going to take a while to heal, I think. These new knives are absolutely lethal, and I am going to have to devise a better way of chopping the chives for the salad. We definitely don’t need the extra protein!!

The last time I did this was with one of my old knives, chopping ginger. I had to go back 2 or 3 times to A&E to have the dressing changed, and for the first 24 hours, had to have my arm in a sling! The trouble is, I’m a right little bleeder, being on an anticoagulant. What a numpkins I am.

Dental appointment

We had our six-monthly check-up last week. I was very relieved that nothing was wrong this time, because recently I’ve had a bit too much of going to the dentist! He said that where my wisdom tooth was taken out has healed up very nicely. I told him I’d had very little trouble with it, and am happy to be rid of it. My hubby has to go back, of course, to have something done. My teeth are much better than his, but I have much more fear of going than he does!

Kitties

No pics this week, I’m afraid. Nothing much to report, except that Lily literally clamours to be let out into the garden, and pretty much has a temper tantrum if the answer is no! Just to be sure Ruby doesn’t escape again, they only go out if my hubby is around. Yesterday afternoon she was practically beside herself, and my hubby let them out, and two minutes later they were eager to come in again because it was their tea time. He says they are just like little children.

They had a major spat a few days ago, and the fur literally flew. I haven’t a clue what brought it on. Sometimes I think Ruby likes to assert herself because she gets fed up with being #2 cat in the pecking order and she has a go at Lily. According to my hubby, Lily can do no wrong and everything is always Ruby’s fault, but I always say that Lily must have provoked her! After it was all over, they went right off to sleep, and when they woke up, all was forgotten and forgiven. Just like little children!

Love the card!! And those knives – wow, I get nervous just looking at them (I’m on warfarin, so I’m only allowed to use butter knives 🙂 )
    Happy WOYWW!

Even without photos I love reading about the cats. You should write a book about their exploits, you do make me smile when I hear about their antics.
Oh dear, I could do with a trip to the dentist but I am like you, have a fear of going. Think it will come about shortly though.
The lunch out sounded wonderful and I am going to have a look at where you went as it sounds rather swish.
Oh dear, you must be careful of those knives. I tend to go extra careful around anything that is like to cut me, either that or get someone else to do the cutting for me. I too am a right little bleeder (blood thinners).
Well Shoshi, enjoy your week, how are the slippers doing?
    Hugs, Neet 7 xx

Hi Shoshi, great job on the card, and it does sound as though you had a lovely lunch. Ouch on the cut, but I’ve done it before with new knives. You forget how sharp they are compared to older ones, I think. Have a lovely week, Hugs, Shaz #14 X

Love the card Shoshi. Glad you had such a pleasant lunch with like minded companions. Hope the finger heals up soon so you can play the guitar again. Meow to Lily and Ruby and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #3

I’m another with a phobia of the dentist (it’s the injections that do for me, not so bothered about the rest of it but won’t attempt treatment without injections….) seeing as I am 60 next week (how???) that is ridiculous… The card for your friend is beautiful, and the ladies that lunch group sounds a lot of fun (beats working, which is what I’ll be doing next week!) Have a great week Shoshi. Helen #1

Gorgeous card. Ouch to the new knife cut – they do look lethal! I hope that the CT scan comes through soon so that plans for moving forward can be made. Still praying about your PIP application. Happy WOYWW. With Love & God Bless, Caro x (#10)

That’s a lot of work on the pretty card, glad you were able to be here and give clues as to it’s heritage!! Nice to see your desk in action. My husband says that despite the different uses of different length knives, one should always use the shortest until one is absolutely used to their sharpness. And, more importantly, learn to step back out it’s way and not to try and catch a knife that’s fumbled or falling. Doesn’t account for the cut nail and thumb I ve also recently achieved from a new knife!

Hi Shoshi, pleased to hear you and your friends had a lovely celebratory lunch. The card is beautiful. Oh dear on cutting yourself with the new sharp knives. I steer clear of them – I know what I am like. Mr M does most of the cooking, and he has a set of knives that I just don’t touch, as I would do far too much damage with them. He even has a safety potato peeler for me, when I feel the urge to do so! Good news that your dentist said your wisdom tooth extraction is healing nicely. I’m dreading the thought of seeing the consultant in August as I know he will refer me for tongue and cheek biopsies again. Once was painful enough! Hope you get news on your new chair, and PIP soon! Have a lovely week, Heather xx #11

Glad you enjoyed your little gathering and love the card too. I think it’s good to get together with friends. Happy woyww and wishing you a lovely creative week, Angela x15x

Oh yes, our cats are just like little children, from their spats, to their little jealousies, to “let me out first!” as Mittsy climbs on top of Inky to get out the door first! But Mittsy adores Inky, as the youngest child does, and Inky tolerates Mittsy as the oldest does to her younger siblings (I’m still just tolerating my little brother!)
So sorry to hear about your knife accident, thankfully it wasn’t worse. Your birthday card is lovely, and so nice that it has deeper meanings for you and your friend. I also love to lunch with the ladies! Sorry I’m so late this week, thanks for sharing, have a great week! Lindart #25
