JUNK JOURNAL – MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE PART 13
Completing the bird page pull-out and the whale tail tabs
The large pull-out sheet that goes in the bird page pocket is now complete. The front is a laminated napkin, laid over a piece of gold card and stitched around. When I photographed it again today I was delighted to see that where I had glued on the gold card, and a bit more besides, some of the gold is now showing through in certain lights.

Working on the reverse side of the pull-out
Originally this was just plain white – the back of the gold card. This card is slightly shiny which can often cause problems but in this case it was fortunately OK.
I began by tea-dyeing it. I sprayed tea onto it, and it immediately began to curl along the grain, and when I pressed it down, it formed a crease right down the centre which was a real bore. Nothing to be done, just work with it!! I dried it with my heat gun and it flattened out OK but the crease is still there. When it was pretty well dry, I sprinkled on a few drops of tea from the tube inside the spray bottle for added texture and once everything was dry, I inked the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.
Adding fussy cut birds
I’ve been doing a lot of fussy cutting recently (I’ll do another post about that), and selected two birds to embellish this piece. I inked the edges to get rid of the stark white and stuck them down in the two opposite corners.
To fill the background, I glued down some of the cut out pieces from my whale tail tabs (see below) and I think this page has come out pretty good.

Completing my whale tail tabs
To see the first part of this project, please see here. I finished shaping the tabs, using my 1-in circle punch, and inked the edges. I then proceeded to decorate them with stamping using permanent archival ink in a few different colours. Those tabs that were either to dark, or gold, I could not stamp, so I added some interest by embossing them.

To show the various designs a bit more clearly, here are some of the tabs laid out flat.

The tabs with the embossed brick-like pattern were a bit dull, so I added a little gilding wax to bring out the design.
I now have quite a collection of these whale tail tabs after my production line efforts! They will be useful for many projects.
The small cut-out pieces
After cutting the shape with the smaller circule punch, I was left with lots of little lozenge-shaped pieces. They were too pretty to throw away so I inked the ages and saved them.

As mentioned above, I used some of these in the birds pull out sheet.
I haven’t made much progress on this album over the past week because of other things intervening, and being too tired to go in the studio.
