INFUSIONS MINI-ALBUM – WORKING ON THE INNER COVER AND TAG EMBELLISHMENTS

Now that the cover construction was complete, I was able work on embellishing the inside.

End papers

I trimmed down the larger sheets of Infusions papers to size and glued them in place inside the cover, leaving a very narrow black border exposed from the black paper. I added this black paper in order to strengthen the structure of the book and to complete its construction.

Spine embellishment attachment tab

Another task today was to complete the spine embellishment attachment tab which I had cut from Tyvek and painted with black acrylic. I went around the edges with a gold marker pen and inserted an eyelet. I folded over the top and glued it in place with tacky glue, holding it all in place with a clip until the glue was set.

Title page

My first plan was not to add an internal cover over the three books, but I changed my mind about this. The book needed a frontispiece and the small books needed some kind of title and details of content. I found the swirly paper in my stash, amongst some other printed papers which I didn’t think I’d ever use, but who knows, given that I have now used one sheet of it for this project!

After inking the edges, I attached the vellum flap.

I cut this piece of vellum down to size to match the underlying paper, and glued the attachment tab onto that of the paper.

I had inked the swirls through a stencil before constructing the piece. This came out a bit darker than intended, so I spent some time wiping it well with a damp piece of kitchen paper which helped a little, but unfortunately it made the vellum curl. It was therefore subjected to the heavy books treatment overnight. This is all one piece now, top and bottom layers. The part on the left will be wrapped around all three spines of the small books and the attachment tab glued in place onto the back cover board.

Individual book titles

In the box with the rest of the stuff were several die-cut disks with Infusions-decorated discs layered on top. I thought I could use some of these as titles, and also add what each book contained.

I may add something further to these as they look a bit boring. I shall glue them in place on the underlying patterned paper, over their respective small books, and the vellum layer will lie on top and hopefully be somewhat visible through the stenciling.

Completing the tag embellishments

I had a jolly good rummage through my trimmings and ribbons cases, and also through my beads box, in order to achieve this cornucopia of colours and textures bursting from the little books’ fore-edges!

Here are a couple of examples of page spreads with embellishments.

I’ve tried to match the colours as best as I could, but sometimes the reverse of the page will be a dfferent colour altogether! Sometimes I have added a thinner ribbon or perhaps added a bead, both from the same colour palette as the following page.

I glued a stack of black-painted squashed toilet roll tubes under the thinnest book so they are now all the same height. Although the binding of that little book doesn’t go round this, it really doesn’t show.

Still to do

In what I hope will be the final installment of this project, I shall glue the small books down onto the back board of the cover, trapping the attachment tab of the title overlay piece. I shall arrange the small discs in place on the patterned paper and then possibly glue the title overlay piece to the spines of the books, but I may leave this to lie free. The final touch will be to make the spine embellishment which will most likely be something like one of the tag embellishments. I intend to have some fun making a book title label to be incorporated into this – using a technique many of us may remember from the 1980s that was all the rage particularly amongst the kids! Something I haven’t thought about for years but it would be a quirky addition!Anyway it’s just finishing touches now, but all very enjoyable ones.
