JUNK JOURNAL – MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE PART 9

Completion of the cat page

Finally assembling all the parts and completing what has turned out to be a pretty busy and crowded page! The baked beans packaging cat is winking at you in this one!! You may notice that I have added some more shading to its ears.

Most of the elements on this page are from greetings cards. Despite my initial concerns, I think the frottage cat has receded quite nicely into the background. The two photos of cats (the kitten and the two heads) were cut from quite shiny cards so I painted them with soft matte gel medium which has reduced the shine. I added a bit of gold text.

To finish the spread, I die-cut a number of heart shapes from shiny and matte gold card scraps. Most of them were stuck down onto the document sleeve page on the left, and I was a bit concerned that the backs of them would show through on the other side, so I cut duplicates and stuck them on, but I needn’t really have worried as they didn’t show through much at all. Here’s the result. The gold hearts do add a bit of interest to this otherwise fairly plain page, and they don’t affect its crinkliness.

The details

When I stitched in the document sleeve, I left the red twine ends quite long because I knew I would want to add something to them. I added a couple of bells and a cat charm, and frayed the ends of the twine.

The small walking cats and the text “they can talk” were all taken from one greetings card, both from the front and the back. I added the gold text with my gold Posca pen. This cat picture looks very like our Ruby when she was little. We call her our trumpeter because she opens her mouth really wide and makes a very loud noise when she is hungry! It’s not so much a joyful noise as a demanding one, though, and like the sound of a crying baby, it’s very hard to ignore.

The two cat heads cut from another card now form a tuck spot for the poem.

I crocheted a little collar for the bottom cat, using the same red twine to tie it in with the centre of the spread, and added another charm which says “I love my cat” on one side, and has a little paw print on the back.

The collar was stuck down with Fabri-Tac adhesive.

This little piece, and the adhered text, were both cut from the back of the walking cats greetings card. I rounded the corners and inked the edges. It is stuck down onto the page and has an eyelet with another cat charm on it.

Not that the page order of this signature is fixed yet, but I re-ordered it to make this the centrefold, because of the gold hearts and red twine featuring on both pages. I am quite pleased with the mostly monochrome additions to this brown page, with cream coloured accents.
