RECYCLED PAPER-GLASSINE BAG MINI-ALBUM VIDEO FLIP-THROUGH
Two years ago I completed a mini-album created from paper bags with a glassine pannel. You can see the final photo flip-through here.
Here are a few sample photos of the finished book, which I posted at the time.
I haven’t done a lot of videos of my work because it always takes me an age to edit them, and also, up until now, I didn’t have very good equipment. Not really knowing what I was doing didn’t help much either!
However, I have gradually acquired some better equipment, including my iPhone which has a very good camera. I have always found those clamp mounts for phones extremely difficult to manage, so I bought a magnetic one which I altered and fitted across my also recently-acquired ring lamp and it works a treat. I can even use the phone without removing its cover. The ring lamp is on an anglepoise-type base which can either be floor or desk mounted. I have chosen the latter because my work stations in the studio are fitted up against the walls of the room and I cannot put anything on the floor the other side from where I sit.
This week I also bought myself a new microphone. The microphone on the iPhone is OK but not adequate for my requirements. I got an entry-level desk-standing microphone from Amazon and so far it’s proved brilliant! I’ve had a couple of trial runs making this particular video and now I think I’ve nailed it.
Video editing
This has always been a major pain. I have LumaFusion on the iPad, which is a very good video editing program indeed, but it is a real fiddle to use on a fairly small screen, even with a stylus. I have also been using AVS Video Editor on the laptop which is really very good for a cheap program but somewhat limited. A few months ago I signed up for a Domestika course on DaVinci Resolve, which is an extremely powerful professional program which also happens to be free, but as soon as I started using it, the program would crash because my computer isn’t powerful enough to run it. I did some research into a major laptop replacement upgrade but haven’t pursued it further – the one I want is top of the range and very expensive! I rather abandoned the whole idea for a few months, and then just recently, with my researches in how to make ASMR videos, came across another really powerful free video editor, VSDC. I have now installed it and am following various videos in order to learn the interface and start using it. I think my laptop is going to be up to the task but time will tell.
For this video I continued for now with AVS Video Editor.
Video flip-through of my recycled paper bag album
This has been a long time coming! The photo flip-through on the above-linked blog page is OK, but this album is very interactive with lots of removable tags, and photos simply don’t do it justice.
I have made a brief introduction using ASMR videoing techniques, to display some of the sounds the book makes, with all its rich texture.
This is a foretaste of the full interactive flip-through of the whole book, which you can view on YouTube. It is about half an hour long.
This interactive album took me just over a month to complete, and it’s one of my favourite projects. It is full of hidden surprises.
