JUNK JOURNAL – MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE PART 6

Working on pages and folios

Quite a productive session in the studio this afternoon. I continued to work on some pages I’d already started, and began some more.

Envelope paper

This is envelope paper with the pattern on the inside to prevent the contents being read. There are lots of different varieties and they nearly always seem to be blue. I added some blue watercolours to make it a bit more interesting.

After this was dry, I chose a metallic acrylic paint from my Arteza metallic set and applied it through a stencil.

Although I really liked the result, it didn’t really fit with the album, so I minimised the effect by adding more layers to it.

Music page and tea-dyed paper

I have an ancient copy of Mendelssohn’s Elijah with no cover and pages missing at the end, so I have no problem with tearing pages out to use. I laid a piece of cereal box liner over the top of the envelope paper with the gold stencilling, choosing a piece with the pulled apart seam on one side to add texture, and held it in place with some glue stick. I applied the music page in the same way, and then ran it through the sewing machine. The text was printed on the computer, cut out and inked, and glued with tacky glue to one of the crinkly chocolate wrappers which I then attached to the page with the same glue. That chocolate wrapper paper is very shiny and springy so I am hoping the tacky glue will hold it. I’ve left the edges of the cereal box liner free so they can be fiddled with to produce a nice sound.

I took a piece of my tea dyed paper which was done with plastic lace, and attached this to the other page with some washi tape. Washi tape isn’t that strong and the glue isn’t very permanent, so I applied some glue stick to it before sticking it down, and there’s washi tape on the other side as well. I’m hoping this will be strong enough for binding.

The brown paper bag page

I’ve added some fussy cut birds from my stash, and some text printed on the computer.

Clear cellophane

I’ve got an envelope containing fancy acetate and various other transparen papers, and dug out a piece of clear cellophane with multicoloured flowers on it. I think this was originally wrapped around some flowers. I’ve created a rough folio with this.

It will allow what’s underneath to show through. It may not end up on these particular pages. I haven’t decided on the order of these folios yet, and am just working on them randomly. I hope everything will come together in a not too chaotic way at the end!

Embellished teabag stain pages

I haven’t done anything further with these apart from working on the backs, but they are now stuck together with washi tape.

The backs of the teabag stained pages

The stains were more or less the same as those on the front. I haven’t done anything with the one on the right which I think is gorgeous as it is, but on the left-hand page, I’ve added some mark making in gold and turquoise acrylic markers and brush pens, and taken away the stark white background with some Tea Dye Distress Ink brushed on.

Sunflower and collage pages

Nothing further done on the sunflower page, but I’ve glued it to another page. This one is the reverse of the blue patterned envelope liner. It has a postmark at the top so I enhanced this with some stamping after glueing down a digital printable collage sheet from the Graphics Fairy Premium Membership. I was quite pleased with how the machine stitching around the music sheet on the other side came out on this page.

None of these facing pages will be next to each other once I stitch the folios into a signature. I’ve got some smaller ones to go in the centre, and I shall play around wth the order until I’m happy with it. I shall also be adding some pockets and tuck spots, with additional pieces to put in, and may add some ephemera and further noise makers to the pages where possible. These further embellishments may serve to make the facing pages more in tune with each other.

I’ve also been working on an audio introduction to the video of the flip-through which I shall be making when this album is complete. It’s a rhythmic piece created from the sounds made by the cover elements, which I’ve put together in Audacity, a free music creating program I have recently downloaded.

My studio is an absolute tip with all this going on! Papers, cut-outs, glues, paints, inks etc. everywhere. I have to try and remember to put things away after using them or I can’t find such things as lids, scissors, pens… I’m not the tidiest worker in the world when I get in the creative zone but this is getting ridiculous. I’ve even started using my guillotine paper cutter on the floor because there’s nowhere else to put it!
